Prepare a manuscript for Kindle or print.

Formatting turns a manuscript into a cleaner publishing document with consistent styles, front matter and layout choices appropriate to the selected edition.

Start from a clean DOCX

Remove accidental manual formatting where possible, use consistent chapter headings and make sure scene breaks are represented consistently.

Choose the edition type

Kindle and print have different layout needs. Print requires decisions such as trim size, margins and page-oriented typography, while Kindle should remain reflowable.

Define book metadata and optional pages

Provide the title, author information and any supported front/back matter options before generating the formatted copy.

Inspect the generated file

Check chapter starts, scene breaks, headings, page breaks, table of contents behavior and any intentionally unusual typography before uploading to a retailer.

Always preview in the publishing platform

Use the retailer's own preview tools as the final check. A DOCX can be structurally correct while still revealing device- or trim-specific details during preview.
