How to format a novel for Amazon KDP without fighting Word for hours.

A clean publishing file depends less on decorative formatting than on consistent styles, predictable chapter structure and knowing the difference between reflowable Kindle layout and fixed print layout.

Start with semantic structure

Use consistent paragraph styles for body text and chapter headings instead of manually changing font size, spacing or alignment throughout the file.

Keep Kindle reflowable

Kindle readers control font size and device layout, so avoid designing the ebook like a fixed printed page. Reliable headings, paragraph indentation and scene breaks matter more than precise page geometry.

Treat print as a separate edition

Print requires trim size, margins, page breaks, headers/footers and page-oriented typography. A print interior should therefore be generated and reviewed separately from the ebook edition.

Handle chapter starts consistently

Every chapter should use the same heading logic and spacing. Scene breaks should also use one repeatable convention rather than ad-hoc empty paragraphs.

Build and verify navigation

For ebooks, ensure headings can support a usable table of contents. For print, check page numbering and front matter transitions carefully.

Preview before publishing

Always use KDP's own preview tools as the final validation step. Device rendering and print trim can expose issues not obvious in Word.
