How to find continuity errors in a novel before readers do.

Continuity problems are rarely obvious inside a single scene. They emerge when facts established dozens of pages apart stop agreeing with each other.

Track facts that must remain stable

Dates, ages, travel times, injuries, possessions, relationships, weather, geography and what each character knows are common sources of contradiction.

Build a chronology

A chapter-by-chapter timeline is one of the fastest ways to expose impossible travel, overlapping events, inconsistent weekdays and characters knowing something too early.

Separate character knowledge from author knowledge

A fact can be true in the story while still being unavailable to a particular character. Track when information is discovered, witnessed or communicated.

Check recurring physical details

Rooms, scars, clothing, vehicles, family relationships and object locations are easy to change accidentally during revision.

Review after structural edits

Moving or deleting scenes is a major source of continuity errors because later chapters often still depend on the old sequence.

Use automated review as a second set of eyes

Whole-manuscript analysis can compare distant passages at a scale that is tedious manually, but findings should still be judged in context because deliberate ambiguity can look like inconsistency.
